Abstract

The cause of death in white tigers at the MC Zoological Park, Chhatbir, Chandigarh, India, was investigated. The blood smears of 12 tigers were examined when 3 white tigers had died and one smear from a dead female tiger revealed organisms referable to Babesia sp. in the erythrocytes. The piroplasms were either single, amoeboid, ring or paired forms. The parasite appeared to belong to the small group of Babesia sp.
