Prevalence of Echinococcus granulosus in dogs and hydatidosis in herbivores of certain North Eastern states of India

Abstract

A study was conducted to record the prevalence of Echinococus granulosus infection in stray dogs in the states of Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram from July 2000 to August 2001. In Assam, overall infection rate was 17.02%. In the states of Meghalaya and Mizoram the rate of infection was 27.77 and 18.18%, respectively, in stray dogs around the abattoir. Simultaneous study on the prevalence of hydatidosis in Assam was found to be 16.76, 6.52, 4.87 and 0.43% in cattle, buffalo, goat and pig, respectively. In Meghalaya, prevalence of hydatidosis recorded was 21.43 and 0.34% in cattle and pigs, respectively. The study was significant as E. granulosus is reported for the first time in this region.
