Abstract

A survey was carried out in district Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh, from July 2005 to June 2006 and a total of 791 faecal samples of bovines (404 cattle, 387 buffaloes) were examined for the presence of gastrointestinal parasitic eggs or cysts. Out of these, 611 bovines were found to be positive for gastrointestinal parasites with the prevalence rate of 77.24%. The incidence rate was higher in cattle (79.95%) than buffaloes (74.4%). Females (82.7%) were more infected than males (53.37%). Maximum incidence was seen in calves less than six months of age (82.1) followed by calves between 7 months to 1 year (79.5%) and animals above 1 year of age (75.7%). Rainy season witnessed maximum infection (90.87%) followed by winter season (83.27%) and summer season (54%). Among gastrointestinal parasites, incidence of amphistomes was maximum (33.12%).
