Abstract

The state of Rajasthan, is semi-arid to arid for major part of the year. Of the 115 elephants maintained at Amber (Jaipur), randomly selected sample population of 4–5 elephants per family, were screened in the month of June-July, 2008 for the occurrence of ectoparasitic infestations and to explore their veterinary significance. Herein the occurrence, site of predilection, detailed morphological characteristics of Haematomyzus elephantis, host specificity, taxonomic placement of the lice and response of topical sponging of lice infested site using Butox 1:500 aquatic dilution for its control have been discussed and documented.
