Abstract

Efficacy of a new pyrethroid compound Butox plus (combination of deltamethrin 5.0mg and piperonyl butoxide 22.1mg/ml) was assessed on cattle and dogs against natural infestation of Boophilus microplus and Rhipicephalus sanguineus, respectively by spraying at concentration of 1ml/litre and 2 ml/litre. Pre- and post-treatment counts of ticks resulted 80.2 and 98.1% control (efficacy) against B. microplus and R. sanguineus, respectively, within 12 h where as 100% mortality recorded within 24 h post treatment against both ticks at 1ml/litre concentration. The period of reinfestation was noted 24–30 and 28–30 days on post-treatment (1ml/litre) in cattle and dogs, respectively. On the other hand, 100% mortality of both the tick species was achieved just within 12 h at 2 ml/lit concentration. Residual effect was found up to 28–32 and 30–35 days in treated cattle and dogs, respectively. However, mild side effects like salivation was observed in animals treated with 2 ml concentrations but 1ml/lit concentration was found to be well tolerated. Rhipicephalid ticks were found to be more susceptible towards this drug.
