Abstract

Incidence of cystic echinococcosis (hydatidosis) in buffaloes slaughtered at Chennai was studied by screening the buffaloes at Corporation slaughterhouse. The overall incidence was found to be 10 per cent. The involvement of the hydatid cysts in lungs, liver, spleen and both lungs and liver were found with a percentage incidence of 61, 29, 1 and 9, respectively. With regard to the fertility status of the hydatid cysts, 53 per cent of hydatid cysts observed was fertile with the liver accounting for more fertile cysts (54 per cent) of the visceral organs affected.
