Abstract

Epidemiological survey of naturally acquired GI nematode infection in cattle kept under semi-intensive and free range systems in some periurban dairy units/typical small holder set up was made to record the prevalence of the major parasitic species, and the relative susceptibility to infection in different age groups/genotypes. The overall prevalence of GI nematodosis was recorded to be 62.1% in cattle. Results revealed that the strongyles were the predominant GI nematodes (50.3%), followed by Trichuris sp. (16.1%) and Strongyloides sp. (8.6%). The frequency of mixed infection (25.0%) was also high. Young animals below 2 years, and those belonging to the 2–4 years age groups were more susceptible, cf. the 4 years and above age groups. Non-descript cattle revealed higher prevalence (70.0%) vs. cattle belonging to the established breeds (30.0%).
