Clinico-haematological studies and therapeutic management of microfilariasis in buffaloes

Abstract

Clinical and hematological changes were studied in 45 graded Murrah buffaloes naturally infected with microfilaria under field conditions in and around veterinary poly clinic, Gudiwada. Clinical examination revealed mucopurulent lacrymal discharges, congested mucous membranes, drastic decrease in milk production high fever (105°F), increased pulse and respiration rates, edema of dependent parts of the body, swollen joints, poor and rough hair coat with mosquito bite injuries on lower parts of the body in the buffaloes. Haematological examinations showed reduced haemoglobin (Hb%), Packed cell volume (PCV), Total erythrocyte count (TEC) and increased total leucocyte count. Infected buffaloes were successful treated with ivermectin at a dose rate of 200ug/kg b.wt. with combination of supporting drugs like vitamin B complex, iron supplements, dextrose normal saline and melonex injection.
