During reintroduction of free ranging gaurs in the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve from Kanha Tiger Reserve, Mandla, two female gaurs were found dead in the core zone of the park. Necropsy examination revealed congestion in the lungs, liver, kidney and heart while histopathological examination revealed smooth walled immature sarcocysts of Sarcocystis spp. in the cardiac muscles.
