Abstract

A coprological survey (Nov. 2012 to Oct. 2015) was carried out in two organized goat farms (Adhartal and Amanala) of Jabalpur for the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in goats. Out of the total 1809 goats examined, 1095 (60.53%) were positive for gastrointestinal parasites. Among various helminth infections, maximum prevalence was of strongyles (44.22%) followed by Moniezia spp. (15.31%), paramphistomes (9.23%), Trichuris spp. (6.25%), Strongyloides sp. (1.27%) and Fasciola gigantica (0.66%). Year wise, significant (P<0.01) difference was found for overall prevalence of gastro-intestinal parasites except F. gigantica and Strongyloides sp. Significantly higher (P<0.01) parasitic infections were observed in winter (67.60%) as compared to monsoon (57.21%) and summer season (52.94%). Age wise prevalence revealed that the overall gastro-intestinal parasitic infection was almost equal in young and adults, and the difference was non significant. It was concluded that the Jabalpur region of Madhya Pradesh had high prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths in goats under farm conditions, and the year and season have significant effect on prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths.
