Abstract

A comparative study was carried out to investigate the hematological characteristics of Badri cow, a native cattle breed of the state of Uttarakhand, and to compare it with that of Sahiwal breed. Six healthy, non-pregnant, non-lactating, adult cows of Badri and Sahiwal breed were selected for the study. All the animals used in the study were examined and found to be clinically normal with respect to their body temperature, respiration rate and heart rate. The analysis of hematological parameters revealed that Badri cattle showed numerically higher values when compared to the Sahiwal breed for the total erythrocyte count, total leukocyte count, hemoglobin and packed cell volume but the difference observed was not significant. The estimated values were within the physiological limits (Reece and Swenson, 2015) suggested for bovines. From the study it can be concluded that the Badri cattle showed similar hematological profile with that of the Sahiwal cattle and given their physical characteristics such as small and compact body size, these breed of cattle are better adapted in the hilly terrains of the state.
