Drug molecules and endogenous moieties are transported across the membrane in order to produce their effect and maintaining the cellular homeostasis, respectively. Several transport systems are available within the milieu interior of the cells. The integrity of the cells need to be protected with the help of these membranes and also preserving and transferring the genetic materials from one life to another. SLC family of transporter is largest of these transporters and has been attributed to serve as drug targets and mediators in order to produce the desired therapeutic response. The complex integral and intercalated membrane spawning structure spurred the challenges to target these SLCs. Albeit, these SLC functions in order to maintain the bidirectional flow of endogenous and exogenous moieties and thus maintain the equilibrium of the cells. These SLCs are now a days being targeted to develop the naive therapeutic drugs for several ailments viz. Uncontrolled Gout, Tradive dyskinesis etc. Hence the present review focuses on covering the basics of these solute carrier transporters and their role in modern drug development.
