Abstract

The present study was planned to evaluate the efficacy of ethanolic extract of Vitis vinifera seeds (EEVVS) against complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) induced arthritis in rats.Wistar rats (40) were divided randomly into 4 groups comprising ten animals in each group. Osteoarthritis was induced by 0.1 ml CFA that was injected once into the rat's right knee joint in groups B,C and D on the day first. After day 14th, group A (Normal control) received no treatment, Group B as a positive control, Group C treated with indomethacin (2 mg/kg bwt/day) and Group D rats treated with ethanolic extract of Vitis vinifera (250 mg/kg bwt/day) daily till day 28.Oral treatment of standard drug indomethacin and Vitis vinifera extract significantly improved the body weight and reduced the joint swelling and edema formation in arthritic rats. The levels of hemoglobin and red blood cells were reduced and white blood cells were improved in standard drug and extract-treated arthritic rats. The levels of blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, total protein and serum albumin were significantly elevated in arthritic rats and were improved in standard drug as well as extract-treated arthritic rats. In conclusion, the standard drug indomethacin and Vitis vinifera extract proved to be significant anti-arthritic activity against CFA-induced arthritis in rats.
