Abstract

Toxicity tests are experiments designed to evaluate the doses or concentrations of toxicants and the duration of exposure required to produce a criterion effect. Usually, the criteria of the effects include the death of exposed animals. The present study was designed to evaluate the lethal dose 50 of ethion in wistar albino rats and to study the multifarious parameters during the period of observation in acute oral toxicity. The acute oral toxicity study was conducted according to OECD test guidelines 425 and the animals were observed and recorded for 14 day for body weight, feed intake, water intake, cage side observational parameters, hematological and biochemical parameters. The results of the present study revealed that the LD50 of ethion was 72.44±1.25 mg/kg body weight, ethion exposed animals showed a significantly reduced body weight including an altered feed and water intake. Toxic signs related to the cholinergic stimulation were observed in animals with dose related hematological and biochemical alterations were recorded during the observational period.
