Abstract

Gayapahrinala watershed falling in the Chotanagpur plateau was selected for modelling its hydrological behaviour. Remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) were used in generation and integration of thematic maps such as land use/cover and Hydrologic Soil Group (HSG) to derive Curve Number (CN) for simulating runoff. The rainfall and corresponding runoff from the watershed for selected storm events for three years were collected through field observations. Non-significant difference was found between observed and simulated runoff, highlighting the importance of application of remote sensing, GIS and Soil Conservation Service - Curve Number (SCS-CN) model for hydrological modelling and design of soil and water conservation structures in different watershed development projects in Chotanagpur plateau.
