Water Productivity of Wheat Succeeding Mungbean and Sorghum in Relation to Planting Techniques and Irrigation Scheduling

Abstract

Planting technique of wheat succedding mungbean and sorghum were evaluated under schedules of irrigation at CRI+IW/CPE of 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9, during 2003–2004 and 2004–05 at research farm of CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, Haryana (India), for water use,yield and water productivity. Wheat crop succeddging mungbean had lesser depletion of soil moisture,and higher ground water contribution, total water use, grain yield and water productivity than succeeding sorghum. In Wheat planted with zero-till technique, the soil moisture depletion and total water use were lower, while, ground water contribution. gain yield and water productivity were higher than the conventional tillage. Total water use in wheat was 512, 472 and 442 mm in 2003–04 and 398, 396 and 326 mm in 2004–05 under irrigation at CRI+IW/CPE=0.9,0.7 and 0.5, respectively. Higher moisture regime with irrigation at CRI+IW/CPE=0.9 resulted increased grain yield of wheat than at CRI+IW/CPE=0.5. The WPtotal in 2003–2004 and WPIrrig during both the crop seasons decreased with higher moisture regime of CRI+ CRI+IW/CPE=0.9 than CRI+IW/CPE=0.5 and 0.7, in 2004–05, the WPtotal increased with increasing level of moisture regimes. The mean WP on net returns basis of irrigation water (WPtotal) as well as of total water use (WPtotal)was higher in case of succeeding mungbean than sorghum as well zero-tillage than conventional.
