Abstract

Environmental quality plays a critical role in urban sustainability and public health. This study explores the perceptions of residents regarding the environmental quality of Gorakhpur city, Uttar Pradesh, with a focus on air and water pollution, waste management, and noise pollution. As a flood-prone region facing rapid urbanization and climate change challenges, Gorakhpur’s environmental concerns are compounded by inadequate waste disposal, waterlogging, and air contamination from vehicular emissions and industrial activities. A structured 400 sample survey was conducted among residents across different socio-economic backgrounds to assess their awareness, concerns, and satisfaction with the city’s environmental conditions. The findings indicate that a significant proportion of the population perceives the air and water quality to be deteriorating due to unchecked pollution and inefficient governance. Waste mismanagement, including improper disposal of solid waste, was cited as a major issue affecting both public health and urban aesthetics. Respondents also highlighted the lack of adequate green spaces, which could mitigate environmental degradation. While many residents recognize the need for stricter environmental policies and active public participation, there is a gap between awareness and action. The study suggests that improving waste management practices, promoting green infrastructure, and enhancing public engagement in environmental initiatives could improve Gorakhpur’s urban environment. Strengthening policy enforcement and integrating nature-based solutions may also contribute to long-term resilience. Understanding people’s perceptions provides valuable insights for policymakers to design sustainable urban development strategies that align with community needs.
