Abstract

West Bengal has a historical background for immigration. Most of the international immigrants came from Bangladesh and Nepal. West Bengal had faced two massive historical illegal immigrations from Bangladesh. First, tragedy happened after partition of India-Pakistan. Eastern border state West Bengal faced a huge illegal immigration from East Pakistan at that time. Second, it faced huge illegal immigration which happened during Bangladesh liberation movement. West Bengal has not only faced international immigration but also faced huge inter-state in migration mainly from its adjoining districts. Main reasons for immigration into West Bengal are of job opportunities in coal-mining area, industrial regions of Bardhaman and adjoining Kolkata and different tea gardens in North Bengal.
