A study of road accidents situation in context to environment and geographical conditions in India

Abstract

India is one of the biggest democracies in the world and it has witnessed an accelerated economic and industrial growth that has changed the Indian society in a significant way. Globalisation, Urbanisation and Industrialisation has changed people's lives exposing newer health issues, like increase in deaths and disabilities due to injuries. India experiences an agitating number of road accidents every year so much so that it tops the global list, with about five lakh accidents recorded every year. It is one of the major avertible public health problems and is on the rise. In recent years, India has witnessed an increase in deaths, hospitalization and disabilities due to injuries on roads caused by the environmental conditions and the geographical factors. Road accident victims mainly adds up to young people in the age group of 18- 45 and this age profile has remained the same in the years 2016, 2017 and 2018 accentuating major inference on economic cost of road accidents, with the exception of their emotional and psychological effect. Road safety is a multisectoral and multidimensional issue that needs the integration of various factors such as development and management of road infrastructure, provision of safer vehicles, legislation and law imposition, approachable health care services and cognizance about road safety measures among the users. Method: The information has been gathered from papers related to road accidents from various databases such as journals, Google scholars, government websites to get an overview of road accidents in India. Result and Conclusion: The burden of road accidents due to environment and geographical conditions was found to be considerably high in India. Road accidents cause a number of effects which can be physical, psychological, social and economical. The load of Road Traffic Accidents is on the hike which makes it necessary to take a multi-disciplinary approach in its prevention and control.
