Advantages and Disadvantages of Single-Child Families for Parents and Child

Fertility all over the world has declined due to several reasons. The inevitable outcome of reducing fertility is the emergence of smaller families. The existing literature highlights single-child families as an emerging trend, especially among the urban middle class. Nowadays, parents want to have a quality child rather than a quantity. These notions encourage many couples to limit their family size to one child. The steady increase in the proportion of single-child families has both advantages and disadvantages for individuals and a family unit. In the present study, an attempt has been made to assess the parents’ perception of the advantages and disadvantages of single-child families.
