A Comparative Study of Newspaper Reading Habits among Boys and Girls of a Rural Institute: A Case Study of G.H.G. Khalsa College, Gurusar Sadhar, Ludhiana (Punjab)

Abstract

A newspaper is a store house of current happenings and latest information of the surroundings available at economical price. The habit of reading a newspaper is beneficial for people of all ages but especially for students to keep them up-to-date in their respective subjects and increase their general knowledge for future development. Role of newspaper in the present times cannot be overlooked. Online newspapers have not decreased the importance of printed version among the students. This study reveals newspaper reading habits among the students of a reputed rural educational institution, G.H.G. Khalsa College, Gurusar Sudhar, Ludhiana, Punjab. The study has been conducted on the analysis of the data gathered through the questionnaire filled by readers. The study found that majority of students’ preferred Punjabi language and ‘Ajit’ is one of the most popular newspapers in the region. Boys like the sports section whereas girls like the education section. Regarding reading of a daily newspaper and the time spent for reading the paper, girls’ percentage is higher than that of the boys. A print copy is still a popular medium to read newspapers.
