Impact of ICT for Collection Development Policy in University Libraries of Assam

Abstract

The study is undertaking to determine the university library collection and the preservations of information in Assam. University library is treated as learning centre for promoting higher education. University libraries play a pivotal role for education, resources is the main component of the university library. Collection of resources reveals the university's status in terms of library services. ICT makes very easy to have access the resources of information in modern days. It not possible to have all collection in a particular library relating to printed documents. Now due to the proliferation of ICT, it is easy to enhance the better library services with the help of digital resources. In the present situation, the demand of the university students are day by day increasing and their uses, the requirement of the users can be possible to fulfil with the help of digital resources. Assam has a good number of universities with maximum numbers of collections in there libraries. It is necessary to study the area in a very systematic way. Therefore, study will be limited to some selected university library. ICT has changed the way of information is being produced, processed and accessed. The Internet has reached very remote places in the world and become a powerful medium to access the information because of availability of most of the information in electronic formats. Information seeking is a natural and necessary mechanism of human existence.
