The purpose of this study is to find the antecedents of employee engagement in information technology (IT) sector in the service industry as it's the major factor that influences performance of an organisation.
This exploratory research was conducted among employees working in IT sector of the Delhi National Capital Region, and the data was gathered through structured questionnaire, which provides the first-hand information on relationship between antecedents and employee engagement. Various independent variables are the antecedents of employee engagement such as organisation culture and communication. The organisation culture comprised of autonomy, external orientation, inter departmental cooperation, human resource orientation and improvement orientation, whereas organisation communication comprised of organisation integration, supervisory communication, personal feedback, corporate information, communication climate, co-worker communication, media quality and subordinate communication. In this study, employee engagement was ascertained using three scales developed by Schaufeli et al. (2006) related to high turnover such as vigour, dedication and absorption. In this study, statistical techniques specifically multiple linear regression has been used to identify the relationship between independent and dependent variables.
We found that between the two main antecedents, organisation communication was more significant contributor with all its components except subordinate communication.
On the basis of our findings, we can suggest that more and more opportunities should be provided to improve the organisation communication with an overall aim to augment employee engagement for better performance of the organisation.
The competition among business organizations working in IT sector has increased many folds due to the globalization in India resulting in increase in their workforce with an aim to provide better and better services to its consumers. This research gives insight on the role of organizational culture and communication on employee engagement in this vital service sector. Since the IT industry today is facing challenges of employee retention, results of current study can be used as guidelines to increase level of employee engagement. It's unique study conducted in Delhi and NCR to identify crucial factors which can boost up the level of employee engagement and augment business success.
