Work Alienation, Work Centrality and Organisational Commitment of Academic Staff: A Study of Higher Education Institutions of Himachal Pradesh

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to examine the relationship between work alienation, work centrality (WC) and organisational commitment and to evaluate the moderating role of WC in the relationship between work alienation and organisational commitment among the academic staff in the Himachal Pradesh technical colleges and institutes. A quantitative approach through the survey instruments was adopted in this study. The total number of returned questionnaires was 242 from a total of 500 questionnaires. Structural equation modelling was employed to test the data fit for analysis purpose. Hay's process (Model 1) was employed to analyse moderating effect of WC on the relationship between work alienation as independent variable and organisational commitment as dependent variable. The results revealed that WC plays a significant moderating role in continuance commitment–work alienation relationship. The study also discusses how other dimensions of organisational commitment can be taken on in future studies.
