Resettlement and Rehabilitation due to Delhi Metro Project: An Assessment

Delhi Metro, essentially a social sector project whose benefits pervaded to a wide section of the economy. The first phase generated substantial benefits to the economy by siphoning off the roads 21.8 lakh consumer trips per day. These would mean 2500 less buses on the road, increase in average speed of road buses from 10.5km/hrto 14km/hr, saving in fuel cost worth Rs. 500 crore per year, more comfortable and safe travel for the commuters, reductions in journey time (50% to 75%), atmospheric pollution and accident rates and improvement in the quality of life. The metro can carry the same amount of traffic as 9 lanes of buses or 33 lanes private motorcars. With the completion of the first phase of the metro, the city of Delhi will experience anet benefit of 437.23 lakhs per day.
