Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a widespread activity across the global enterprises. The question is whether enterprises are acting rationally or irrationally from a total system perspective. Many companies are investing substantial amount of resources to upgrade social welfare objective. Even then, the concepts and methods are not very well understood by many corporations. This paper attempts to take a look at the various definitions of CSR from the literature and identify conditions under which Indian firms undertake responsibility while commenting about the orientations of the companies for the same. A set of propositions are put forth to explain the concepts, motivations and perspectives and approaches to undertake CSR. Finally, a modeling framework is proposed from the experiential learning of the author. What is postulated here in this paper that corporates have a deeper strategic role in being responsible to the society by way of distributing knowledge and engaging talents and overall deploying resources for inclusive development and not merely engaging in meaningless philanthropy. CSR is to be imbibed as a spirit of service and hence it must be the spiritual leadership practice.
