Abstract

The present paper is comprised of four parts. Since the term ‘field’ or ‘field work’ has varied meaning in different disciplines, the first part of this paper goes through the terminological debates and develops understanding about field work training in social work. The social work discipline today has achieved a better status from its initial charity-based tradition. It is now intimately related to the challenges of social development, answers to some of the social problems to serve citizens in the civil society and professional identity or professional self. Therefore, the second part of the paper makes effort to highlight the past and present scenario of field training in social work. The third part discusses in details and gives ideas how methods and techniques oriented field work training can be imparted. At the end, paper illuminates the contemporary challenges for methods and techniques oriented field work training which is also challenges for the profession in today's context.
