The cruel some historical practice of female infanticide has taken a new form in developing India as the sex selective abortions or female foeticide. In last three decades the pre natal sex selection has ramified all over the country despite the stringent law of PNDT Act, 1994. With each census survey fairing worse than the earlier, the data of 2011 census is shamefully. the lowest in the history of the Independent India. The states which are more developed are more aversive to the girl chid birth. The sociologist and demographers have analysed the problem and have indicated dire future consequences of the skewed sex ratio in India.
Thus, can we actually assert that India is developing when the practice against the right to life of a girl child is rampant and worsening over the years? This paper deals with this question and examines the menace of prenatal sex determination and selection in India, legislative provisions, its future implications and the way ahead.
