Effect of Educational Qualification and Residential Background on Reading Interests Among Elementary School Teachers

Abstract

Elementary teachers’ general attitude towards reading, benefits of reading interests, reading preferences and their ranking about different subject areas were studied in relation to residential background and qualification wise. The sample consisted of 200 elementary school teachers from different schools of Patiala district. Descriptive survey method was used for the present study. Reading interests questionnaire by Meenakshi (2003) was used for data collection. Data were analyzed by percentage analysis. From the findings of present study it was found that elementary teachers’ reading interests vary according to educational qualification and residential background. But reading interests of the teachers are not pronounced and reading is not essential activity of elementary school teachers. On the basis of findings of the study, it is recommended that intervention efforts need to be made for motivating reading interests among elementary school teachers.
