Environmental degradation is a major problem of our present world .To combat this problem, we needs environmentally sensitive and aware people. Thus, the role of teachers’ in this regard is very important because they shape the future in their classrooms. Their knowledge and awareness about the environment yield positive results to counter these problems. In this way, it is necessary for us to know that how much our teachers are aware about the environment and the problems associated with it. The present study was conducted to provide information about the level of environmental awareness of prospective school teachers and in-service school teachers in Patiala distt. of Punjab (India). Data was collected with self made questionnaire on 100 pre-service school teachers and 60 in-service school teachers. The findings showed that both type of teachers possesses fairly good level of environmental awareness. It is concluded that there is no gap exist between the environmental awareness of prospective teachers when distributed gender wise and subject wise. On the other hand in-service school teacher’s especially female teachers have more awareness on environmental issues. It is suggested that in-service school teacher training program should be re-planned.
