This article presents the points which necessitate the development of Indian citation index (ICI) for portraying comprehensive and realistic picture of country's research. Also, describes the contents organization and process of Indian Citation Index (ICI). It portrays the number and corresponding percentage of Indian journals in Science Citation Index from 1961 to 2009.
