The field of Library and information sciences has gone through different stages of technological upgrades. The unprecedented growth and changes in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has influenced and changed the methods in which information can be retrieved and consumed. The changes have brought forth new challenges as well as new opportunities in the way these services are rendered and availed. This article explores the changes in the field of Library and Information sciences, from the time it started becoming digital and online. The article also discusses how the advanced information technologies including those made in the area of Semantic Web will help improve the Information Retrieval and how Big Data is important for Open Data initiatives.
