Both in the poetry of Nissim Ezekiel and Philip Larkin there is a dichotomy between the experiences of the past and present; even a world of conscious choice to stay on is contrasted with an aspiration to move on for prospective growth. In the social context there is a pertinent sense of loss but there is no sense of infliction of displacement. In Larkin's ‘High Windows’ it is explicitly the exclusion followed by the loss of youth. The poetry of Philip Larkin and Nissim Ezekiel did not initiate to set things right by issuing social messages or by criticism. They recorded the impulses of a world waking to freedom and more personal freedom.
