Abstract

There is no clear indication of post adverbial inflections in the Ashtadhyayi of Panini. In the post-adverbial position only the second inflection (Dwitiya Vibhakti) is used. It is to be noted that the second inflection which is used in the post-adverbial position should be guided by the rules and regulations i.e. in accrodance with sutras of Panini. Gadadhar Bhattacharya in his “Vyutpattivaad” has accepted the second inflection by “Karmani Dwitiya” sutra of Panini. According to him even in the absence of the objective case, the objective case is said to be there. Objective case, neuter gender and singular number of adverbs are guided by prescriptions not by sutras. Gokul Nath Upadhyaya in his “Padvakya Ratnaker” maintains that the post-adverbial position of the second inflections (Dwitya Vibhakti) is accepted as a case of sub-morphological inflection. A fact which is accepted by Shri Krishn Kant Bhattacharya in his commentary of “Shabd Shakti Prakashika”. New grammarians of Sanskrit Nagesh Bhatt et al also accept the position of the second inflection by Karmani Dwitya sutra. According to grammarians there are no compounds of adverbs. Hence the use of compound adverbs in Meghdoot of Mahkavi Kaali Das is not proper and goes against the Mahabhashya of Patanjali. To conclude it may be said that the second inflection (Dwitiya vibhakti) in the post-adverbial-position is justified.
