Since Vedic age the sanctity and sign~ficance of river Saras'[oati is known among the rivers of Aryabrata. According to Rg Veda Saraswati river flowing from Himalayas to Sea is giver of cereals, provider of livelihood and protector of life. It is considered among the most significant rivers of Aryabrata. In Manusmriti it is known as the boundary line of Brahmavrata. The Vedic River Saraswati, though invisible, is imprinted as a 110ly river on the minds of Indians. In Brahman scriptures it is established as river in the beginning but later as invisible river. There are number of theories avaialbe in the Puranas also. According to Padma Purana it is situated in Kuru Kshetra pilgrimage. Similarly, there are references of this river in Brall1navaivarta, Matsya, Vayu Purana and Srimada Bhagwata. According to Sri Mada Bhagwata Purana Kardam Rishi worshipped along ZJ..1ith Devahuti at the southem side of the Saraswati River, which blessed him with a son like Kapil Muni. In modem times also it is remembered on the ocasions of sacramental rituals. According to satpatha Brahman it disappeared because of geographical changes. The present paper deals with the available references of River Saraswati in the in Sanskrit scrip tures and ancient literature of Hindu India.
