Abstract

Condensation of amides with benzaldehyde and p-cresol furnished 2-(N-acyl/aroyl-benzylamino)-4-methyl“phenols (I) which on reaction with p-toluidine in presence of anhydrous ZnCl2 afforded 2-(N-acyl/aroyl-benzylamino)-4,4′-dimethyl diphenyl amines (II). (II) on heating in the presence of S and iodine yielded 2-(N-acyl/aroyl-benzylamino)-3,6-dimethyl phenothiazines (III) which were evaluated for their antiviral activity.
