Studies on biology of chickpea pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on chickpea

Abstract

Biological studies of Helicoverpa armigera were conducted on chickpea, cicer arietinum under laboratory conditions at room temperature during November 2005 to February 2006. There were five larval instars. The average larval period of all five larval stages was 24.40±1.50 days while average pupal period was 14.32±1.4 days. The duration of total life span for male was 52.8±3.56 days and for female was 58.6±4.52 days. The number of eggs lay per female ranges from 316–1402 with an average of 840.2±110.50. The Incubation period varies from 2–4 days. The Hatching percentage of eggs was 90.25±6.8 percent and caterpillars attained maturity with in 16–30 days. Pre-pupal stage lasted in about 2–3 days. The Pre-oviposition, oviposition and post-oviposition periods were 3.12±0.66, 9.8±0.54 and 1.22±0.36 respectively. The sex ratio of male and female was 1:0.76.
