Abstract

7-Hydroxy-4-methyl-coumarin (1) (4-methyl umbelliferone) was obtained when 1,3-dihydroxy benzone (resorcinol) was condensed with Ethylacetoacetate in conc. H2SO4. Reaction of (1) with arylamido/imidoalcohols in conc. H2SO4 afforded 8-arylamido/imidoalkyl-7-hydroxy-4-methyl coumarins (2) which on heating under reflux for six hours in dry pyridine followed by pouring in acidified cold water resulted in arylamido/imidoalkyl-7-hydroxy-4-methyl quinolin [1,5-c] mercapto/thio-1,3,4-triazoles (3) as target compounds. Compounds (3) were studied for their physiological and biochemical effects on seed germination and seedling growth in pea.
