Amphizoic amoebae are small, aerobic and capable of existing both as free-living as well as parasitic forms depending upon the prevailing conditions. Till four decades back, the disease causing amoeba known to medical science was Entamoeba histolytica: but two amphizoic amoebae (Naegleria and Acanthamoeba) have become established asopportunist pathogen of human beings causing amoebic meningitis and keratitis. These amoebae are ubiquitous protozoa and widely dispersed in our environment and have been isolated from various habitat such as water, soil, sewage and vegetables etc. The present communication deals with the isolation of pathogenic amphizoic amoebae from Gomti River and its biological characterization and scanning electron microscopy.
