Hypoglycemic activity of ethanol extract of Tinospora cordifolia (MIERS) in normal and alloxan induced diabetic rats

Tinospora cordifolia, also called ‘Guduchi’ is a perennial climber, herbaceous vine belonging to family Menispermaceae. It has been widely used by different traditional and folk systems of medicine for treatment of diabetes. 95% ethanolic extract of Tinospora cordifoliawhole plant was tested for hypoglycemic activity in normal and alloxan-treated diabetic rats. Normal rats were grouped into fasted, fed and glucose loaded models. Oral administration of ethanolic extract (250 mg/kg body weight) resulted in a significant reduction of blood glucose concentration in fasted, fed and diabetic rats. It also lowered blood glucose level in oral glucose tolerance of glucose-loaded model.
