For Mahatama Gandhi eradication of social evils from Indian society was as important an task as leading the freedom struggle against British colonialism. Therefore he kept the agenda of ‘constructive work’ always alive even during the apogee of his political movements. He was very much concerned about the plight of Indian women and therefore he gave welfare of women no less significance than his other concerns like removal of untouchability, promoting Hindu-Muslim unity and promotion of Khadi etc. He urged people to abandon all biases against them and to provide her their deserving place in society. It was because of his efforts that Indian women began participating in the freedom movement. The very uniqueness of Gandhiji's thoughts was that he picked up his arguements from the ancient texts and scriptures and arrived at the conclusions best suited to the contemporary needs. This paper attempts to describe his views and opinions about Indian women in above perspective.
