Abstract

India after independence had to prepare its own independent foregin policy which could not have the influence of the British. At this juncture, V.K. Krishan Menon emerged out to be the most efficient and capable Foreign Minister on Whom J.L. Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India relied the most. Though V.K. Krishna Menon was a versatile politician and his effect, on almost every issue related to the country could be seen, the present paper deals with his accumen as a foreign Minister. Though V.K. Krishan Menon dealt various matters of foreign poilicy such as Korean Crises, disarmament Indo-China Conflict Bandung Conference, Suez Crises and Hungary, yet in the proposed paper I have thrown light on the matter of disarmament and Korean Crises extensively. The paper throws some light on the views of V.K. Krishna Menon on the term Non alignment also and how he linked India's foreign Policy with the particular term and how V.K. Krishan Menon justified India beign a non-aligned country. The paper also describes the points at which Krishan Menon had aimed the foreign policy of India. He emerged as a key figure on the international scene and was acclaimed by even his critics. With his efforts V.K. Krishan Menon solved the Korean problem and with his successful armistice plan brought an end to the Korean war and he also brought forth 17 point solution to the Korean deadlock which proved to be the most effective instrument in solving Korean issue. Menon imagined the world sans arms and weapons. For that he strongly pleaded in the United States and said that a peaceful world can be thought of only if there were no weapones. He was of the view that the use of nuclear weapons would bring destruction and this would create hatred and animosity for each other. He wanted India also not to use nuclear weapons. He tried to have the support of other countries on the issue. Where some countries were in favour of non-nuclear weapon world, others did not heed to his suggestion. Even in India there were many who were against this policy of India not going nuclear. It has been tried in the paper to focus on two utmost important foreign policy matters of V.K. Krishan Menon.
