The first division students are thought to be elite in any educational institutions because of their superior performance. They achieve this academic distinction as a result of many factors working simultaneously such as the school, home and many other agencies apart from their natural endowments. It is therefore essential to know the social set up from which they come. The present investigation is an attempt to study the social origin of first division matriculates. The objectives of the study were to study the family background, beliefs & value pattern in the family and students’ interpersonal relationship with the members of their family. The ‘descriptive survey method’ was used and the sample of 200 first division matriculates (140 males & 60 females) was selected through purposive sampling technique. The “Students’ Social Origin Questionnaire” developed by investigator was used to collect the data.
