1857 saw British experiencing its greatest shock which shook the very basis of British power. Though the Revolt was not widespread and it was concentrated in few areas only but its impact was felt not only in India but also in Britain. The Revolt of 1857 was not led by any one or particular individual or leader. Many known and unknown rebels emerged from the masses as the torchbearers of the rebellion. One such effort was made by Amar Singh a zamindar of Jagdishpur and the brother of Baboo Kunwar Singh. Though he belonged to Bihar but his battles were not confined to his home state alone. The bands of rebels under him also attacked many areas of United Provinces in the neighborhood of Bihar such as Ghazipur and Ballia etc. He was ultimately defeated by the British army and was captured in 1859. The present Paper deals with the campaigns and battles of Amar Singh during the great revolt of 1857.
