Abstract

The European Union is a fairly new entity in international relations. The European Union was established by the Treaty of Maastricht on 1 November 1993. However, EU traces its origins to the European Coal and Steel Community formed among six countries after the Second World War. India's relation with the European Union dates back to the time when EU was in its process of evolution. At present the European Union is India's most important partner in trade, investment and development co-operation. The EU accounts for more than a quarter of India's exports and imports of goods. The EU is also India's biggest partner in development cooperation and the second largest source of foreign direct investment. This paper studies nature and growth of emerging India – EU partnership and brings to light the potential that the partnership offers.
