Abstract

An investigation was conducted with 21 crosses of groundnut for estimating the range of variation, heritability and genetic advance for five characters in F2 and F3 generations. The results indicated that there was substantial exploitable genetic variability among the crosses for various attributes studied. It was found that the response to selection varied from population to population because of their different genetic backgrounds. ICG 2716 x Tirupati 1 and ICG 2716 x JL 24 were identified as superior crosses with moderate to high heritability and high genetic advance for kernel yield, harvest index and well fiIled and mature pods per plant in both the generations studied.
