An investigation was carried out with six hundred twenty five biparental progenies (F3) of blackgram cross PDU-3 x L-400 to study the character association. Positive and significant correlations of grain yield was observed with plant height, branch number, cluster number, pod number, seeds/pod, pod length and 100 seed weight. Pods/plant followed by clusters/plant and seeds/pod exhibited highest positive direct effect on yield. Correlation studies demonstrated the significance of biparental mating approach as biparental progenies exhibited strong character association between yield and other component. The observed inconsistency in performance of different characters may have been caused by genetic shift and breakage of gene linkages.
