A field experiment consisting of 4 cropping systems viz., sole maize (Zea mays (60 cm), sole maize (45/90 cm), maize + urdbean (45/90 cm) and maize + soybean (45/90 cm) and 4 levels of N (0, 40,80 and 120 kg N/ha) was conducted during rainy seasons of 1997 and 1998 to study the effect of nitrogen levels on growth, yield parameters, yield, nitrogen uptake and grain crude protein yield of intercropped grain legumes. Application of nitrogen in intercropping system had significant effect on LAI. grain yield, nitrogen uptake, crude protein yield of urdbean and soybean intercropped with maize at lower level (40 kg N/ha) of N applied.
