Metabolic state of pea seeds germinated in the presence or absence of light

Abstract

The dry seed of the two cultivars (Arkel and Boneville) of pea (Plsum sativum L.) differed significantly in the nalive values for carbohydrcste, protein, nitrate, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The embryonic axis of the seeds soaked in water for different intervals in the presence of light (9 or 18 Wm 2) possessed larger quantities of the nutrients than those germinated in dark. Ught favoured the solublization of proteins but not that of carbohydrates. The activity of nitrate reductase and peroxidase increased as the germination progressed. The cotyledons and the embryonic axis exposed to light exhibiteJ higher level of nitrate reductase activity than those germinated in dark.
