Biomass partitioning and growth of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) as influenced by sowing dates and genotypes

Abstract

A field study comprising five sowing dates and four genotypes of chickpea was carried out during winter seasons of 1999 to 2000 to study the effect of sowing dates on partitioning of biomass, dry matter accumulation and crop growth rate of chickpea genotypes. Dry matter accumulation in leaf, stem and pods decreased significantly in December 5 and December 20 sowings as compared to November 5 sowing. Chickpea planted on or before November 5 produced higher crop growth rate as compared to delayed sowings. Among genotypes at maturity HC 3 and C 235 accumulated the highest and lowest total above ground bio-mass, respectively. Crop growth rate of chickpea genotype HC 3 was found higher except between 60 – 89 DAS where it was found higher in H 92–67.
